What you can do

Collecting ocean data comes with physical and financial challenges. It requires ships, satellites, robots and people in remote places. And that’s even before we use the data to improve our understanding of the ocean, innovate new technology, or use it to develop sustainable solutions. Data collection and processing is becoming more accessible, however. Thanks to advances in computing, everyone now the opportunity to work with ocean data, and to help with marine data-processing projects.

Assisting with data projects opens up the research to a wider audience. This in turn improves overall data quality, which can then go on to inform better practical use of the data.

  • Discover floating forests here.
  • Explore the depths of the ocean to help monitor the Hawai’i fish population here.
  • Transcribe historical marine invertebrate labels to activate specimen data for research here.
